Editing, Proofreading, Copywriting. What's the Difference?

[Hong Kong - August 18, 2017] What’s the difference between proofreading, editing, and copyediting? This is a common question that often confuses many people, but it’s quite simple really. To avoid confusion, an author and editor really need to be on the same page (sorry about the pun!) to ensure that expectations are met. To help clarify this, we’ve provided a quick guide to help explain these differences.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the process of going through a document with a fine-tooth comb, seeking out the tiniest of errors. This process checks for spelling errors, punctuation errors, typos or incorrect use of regional English (i.e. British or US spelling). While Microsoft word can spot a lot of these errors, it can also overlook some blatant mistakes that should never be published or submitted. You should always rely on an experienced proofer if you want the absolute best out of your content.

 Editing

Okay, this is very different to proofreading. An editor will approach your document more aggressively and question all aspects of your word choice, sentence structure, and overall writing quality. All this combines to ensure for better flow and clarity throughout your document. A professional editor will always correct any obvious errors they come across, but they will also use their intuition and expertise to improve all aspects of your writing.

Copyediting

This can be confusing, but when explained it’s really quite simple. Copyediting (also known a sub-editing) involves proofreading, but also ensures that your document meets a particular tone or house style of your company or publication. A good copyeditor is a writing chameleon, and has expert knowledge of various styles and tones. You will often see newspapers or magazines having a specific tone or feel – this is all thanks to copyeditors.

We hope this brief public service announcement has been of some use. If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with one of our editors. We’re a really nice bunch!
