Want to become a food blogger? get started here

Does the idea of writing about food for a living sound impossible? Taking award-winning snaps of Michelin Star cuisine juxtaposed with impeccable writing sounds like fun, right? This might be the aspiration of any budding food writer, but it takes time, patience, and hard work. Anthony Bourdain’s career wasn’t cheese and rainbows from the very beginning – he worked extremely hard for his success. Nowadays, if a food blogger wants to get noticed, they need to be strategic. That’s why we have compiled some top tips on becoming a successful food blogger.

Don’t be afraid of bad writing

Knowing that your blog will be accessible to the masses is a frightening prospect – especially if you’re not confident about your writing ability. Although your fears might be rational, you need to start from somewhere. Unfortunately, the cyber world can be a cruel place. But taking a leap of faith and accepting that you can’t please everyone is a crucial step towards having a great food blog. So just begin. Write about the last decent meal you had. Take some photos. And then post it online. The chances are that only your friends or family will read it. Your ultimate goal is having other like-minded foodies read your blog, but this will take time.

Practice makes perfect

Starting a blog from scratch requires patience, and it can take a while to find your voice. The only way around this is to stay positive and keep writing. It always helps to have someone edit or proofread your work (like us!), but the most importing thing is to just write. Over time – with persistence and effort – you’re writing skills will become more refined, and describing the buttery flakiness of puff pastry will soon become an absolute breeze.

Share your passion with others

It is more than likely that your followers will also be food lovers. As such, they won’t just want a dry rundown of where you had dinner last night. Instead, they will want to experience everything that excited you. Don’t be afraid of getting a little over excited at times – enthusiasm can be infectious. This type of passion will greatly increase the likelihood of gaining more like-minded followers. That said, too much passion can come across as being fake. A long-winded description of eggs on toast is really not necessary. Just keep it plain and simple. A touch of passion and a sprinkle of personality will be enough. So go fourth and share your love of food with others!

Post regularly - make it a habit

Once your blog is up and running, you will need to add as much content as possible. It’s a great idea to set a monthly target so that you can keep track of your progress. Your viewers will often visit your website to see your latest posts. If they find that your blog hasn’t been updated in a while, they might look elsewhere. YouTube blogger Casey Neistat, who has over 10 million subscribers, mentioned that he only began to see dramatic increases in his followers after posting one video per day. Setting reasonable goals and then building upon your success is important. You might choose to write one article every two weeks, and then slowly increase your post frequency. With time and experience, you will become a more efficient blogger, and regularly posting articles will be as easy as pie.
