The pen is truly mightier than the sword. Writing helps us to express our thoughts, emotions, and ideas, and is unrivalled by most other forms of communication.
If you’re aspiring to become a professional writer or simply want to improve your communication skills, there are several simple things you can do to improve your writing. As a professional copywriter and editor, there are a number of strategies I have personally used over the years to improve my writing skills, and I’d like to share a few of them with you.
Read loads of books, and then read some more
Step away from social media and rest those doomscrolling thumbs. Instead, start making a conscious effort to read as much as you can. If it has been a while since you last read, trying revisiting an old book that you really like. This will help to maintain your focus and keep your reading consistent. Also pay attention to the structure, language, and flow of the writing, and try and incorporate these elements in your own work.
Respect the process
Some people have referred to ‘the muse’ as an entity that emerges after being committed to the creative process over a certain period of time. Going through all the highs and lows of creativity is the natural order to which new ideas can emerge. You might have days where writing a single sentence seems like drawing blood from a stone, while other days present endless creativity. It’s important to be aware of this process, and make a conscious effort to always produce something every day. You can always make changes or completely delete things if you are unhappy at a later stage.
Seek honest feedback
Having another person read through your work seems daunting, but it can really help you to grow as a writer. Learning to embrace the suggestions of others also helps you to develop a thick skin, which is quite necessary for writing and most other creative endeavours. For some broader feedback, you might want to explore online writing communities or get in touch with one of our editors at English Editorial Solutions. Always keep in mind that being creative makes you vulnerable to criticism, but remember to stay positive and apply anything that will improve your work.
Write without fear, edit without mercy!
Great writing doesn’t always come instantly. You will most likely need to refine and revise your work once it has been completed. Some people may try to edit and write simultaneously, but this can obstruct the creative flow. Personally, I won’t fix my spelling or grammar during the initial stages, as it tends to slow down my writing process. There is nothing worse than forgetting a potentially amazing idea because you have been distracted by the editing process. Beginning to write from scratch is scary for everyone, but take a leap of faith and just go for it. If you have any regrets, the delete button is only a pinky finger away!
Becoming a better writer is an ongoing journey that takes time, energy, patience, and experience. Reading and writing regularly will give you the best chance to improve your skills. Even the most talented writers have doubted their abilities, but in the end, they never gave up. This mentality also applies to you – so keep going and write every day.
